چکیده

Five years ago, in the European English Messenger VII/2 (Spring 1998), Peter Trudgill gave an illuminating account of "Standard English: What It Isn't". In a way, the following paper adopts a complementary perspective. It explores what non-standard English is, or rather what is fascinating about non-standard varieties of English (besides telling us more about what Standard English isn't or hasn't) when focussing on their morphology and syntax. During the last two decades, but especially over the last few years, this field of research has been very much on the rise, after more than a century of neglect in dialectology. Dialect grammar has attracted attention from a sociolinguistic, a generative and, most recently, from a typological angle. It is the latter approach which will take centre stage in this paper. I will present an outline of the major goals of a research project at the University of Freiburg, its methodology, some first results and, finally, of what we can learn from the grammar of non-standard varieties (in English and other languages) for the study of large-scale language comparison.

Search-based inference of dialect grammars

Building parsers is an essential task for the development of many tools, from software maintenance tools to any kind of business-specific, programmable environment having a command-line interface. Whilst grammars for many programming languages are available, these are, very often, almost useless because of the large diffusion of dialects and variants not contemplated by standard grammars. Writi...

On Management Matters: Why We Must Improve Public Health Management Through Action; Comment on “Management Matters: A Leverage Point for Health Systems Strengthening in Global Health”

Public health management is a pillar of public health practice. Only through effective management can research, theory, and scientific innovation be translated into successful public health action. With this in mind, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has developed an innovative program called Improving Public Health Management for Action (IMPACT) which aims to address th...

Practical Earley Parsing

Earley’s parsing algorithm is a general algorithm, able to handle any context-free grammar. As with most parsing algorithms, however, the presence of grammar rules having empty right-hand sides complicates matters. By analyzing why Earley’s algorithm struggles with these grammar rules, we have devised a simple solution to the problem. Our empty-rule solution leads to a new type of finite automa...

Practical Parsing of Generalized Phrase Structure Grammars

An efficient algorithm is described for parsing a dialect of generalized phrase structure grammar (GPSG). A practical parsing system, based on the algorithm, is presented. The dialect of GPSG which the parsing system accepts is smaller, but considerably "purer" (closer to the original definition of GPSG) and mathematically "cleaner" than that which is accepted by other practical parsing systems...
